Following the flight paths of paper airplanes to their uncertain destination has been a pursuit of Susan Coolen’s since 2001. Her collection of paper airplanes and other folded objects numbers over 200 at present. These airborne constructions represent a decisive act on the part of their makers to transform plain paper, cardboard, cash register receipts, ticket stubs, metro transfers, brochures, and even pop cans into something other than trash. Coolen’s collecting efforts extend this transformation even further.
