Streets of Trash
By Lisa Rochon
Lisa Rochon’s snapshots of an urban dérive reveal just how much we’ve adjusted our eyes to the crap on the sidewalks. Placing a toilet in the lobby of your office is unacceptable – but position it outside and there’s no shame. Her wandering eye picks up both the pathos and the bathos she encounters among the city’s odd pairings of pain and kitsch.

Following the flight paths of paper airplanes to their uncertain destination has been a pursuit of Susan Coolen’s since 2001. Her collection of paper airplanes and other folded objects numbers over 200 at present. These airborne constructions represent a decisive act on the part of their makers to transform plain paper, cardboard, cash register receipts, ticket stubs, metro transfers, brochures, and even pop cans into something other than trash. Coolen’s collecting efforts extend this transformation even further.
